Austria’s independence is not the story of a single declaration or a single day. Its modern sovereignty emerged through a series of dramatic events that transformed the country during the 20th century.
After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, the Republic of Austria was established. However, its independence was severely challenged in the following decades.
In 1938, Nazi Germany annexed Austria in an event known as the Anschluss. Austria ceased to exist as an independent state and became part of Nazi Germany. The country remained under German rule until the end of World War II in 1945.
Following the war, Austria was occupied by the Allied powers—the United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom and France. Austrian political leaders worked to rebuild the country and restore its sovereignty.
A major turning point came on 15 May 1955, when Austria and the four occupying powers signed the Austrian State Treaty in Vienna. The treaty restored Austria as an independent and democratic state and ended the Allied occupation.
On 26 October 1955, Austria declared its permanent neutrality. This date is now celebrated as Austrian National Day.
Austria’s neutrality became an important part of its national identity. The country committed itself not to join military alliances and not to permit foreign military bases on its territory.
Today, Austria is a sovereign European republic and a member of the European Union, having joined in 1995. Its history shows that independence can be a long process rather than a single moment.
